Curriculum

St Catherine’s fosters curiosity through child-led, inclusive learning, celebrating diversity with AUSLAN, languages, SCHEMAs, and the Koori curriculum.

Connection Between Play and Learning

At St Catherine’s Early Education Centre, we embrace the connection between play and learning. Our educators use a child-led, emergent curriculum that combines open-ended play, intentional teaching, and spontaneous discovery. This method fosters curiosity and helps children expand their knowledge in a community-oriented learning environment.

Emphasising Agency, Wellbeing, and Identity

We believe every child is a capable learner from birth. Our approach prioritises children’s agency, wellbeing, and identity, providing opportunities for them to develop and express themselves. By fostering a strong sense of autonomy, we empower children to actively engage in their learning journey.

Empowering Children’s Autonomy

We foster children’s autonomy by offering opportunities for decision-making and reflection, which boosts their self-confidence and independence.

Prioritising Wellbeing

A child’s wellbeing is key to their development. We support emotional and physical health through practices that build resilience and positive relationships.

Celebrating Identity

We encourage children to express their unique qualities, helping them build self-esteem and a strong sense of identity in a supportive environment.

Celebrating Diversity

Our inclusive curriculum celebrates diversity by integrating the cultures and languages of families within the Greater North Melbourne community. We use AUSLAN for universal communication, while also offering Spanish and Vietnamese language programs. This ensures all children feel valued and supported, promoting a welcoming and accessible environment for everyone.

Exploring SCHEMAs and the Koori Curriculum

We continually innovate our practices, recently exploring SCHEMAs—patterns of thinking and cognitive processes—to enrich learning. We advocate for inclusion by ensuring the voices of children, families, and educators are heard.

Additionally, we integrate elements of the Koori curriculum in alignment with the Early Years Learning Framework, supporting a holistic and culturally relevant learning experience.
